Redbridge Sports and Leisure announces new Chief Executive Officer
Redbridge Sports Centre Trust Ltd has appointed Wayne Alexander as Chief Executive Officer, succeeding Ken Leggate, who served the Trust for over 30 years, initially as General Manager and, since 2004, as CEO.
Wayne brings over 20 years of senior leadership experience at Redbridge, having held positions as Operations Manager and General Manager. He joined the Centre in 2000, following his successful tenure as a facilities manager at Rollerbowl in Romford and his role in redeveloping the Southend Kursaal into a premier social venue in the South-East.
Following Ken’s departure earlier this year, Wayne served as Interim CEO before the Board of Trustees confirmed his appointment. The Board is confident in Wayne’s ability to continue the Centre’s 50-year legacy as a community leisure facility and an internationally renowned venue for tournaments and major events.
Ras Gohil, Chair of Redbridge’s Board, paid tribute to Ken Leggate’s long-standing leadership, stating,
“Ken has been a vital part of Redbridge Sports & Leisure for 32 years, with 20 years as CEO. We extend our heartfelt appreciation for his unwavering commitment and significant contributions. Our commitment to continuity and stability for our members and community remains steadfast, and Wayne’s experience and understanding of our operations make him the ideal leader.”
Like much of the leisure industry, Redbridge has faced significant strategic and operational challenges following the pandemic lockdowns of 2020. Throughout its history, the Trust has completed ten major facility development phases, including an Olympic-standard badminton and netball training venue used for the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games. Wayne has been instrumental as part of the Senior Management Team in implementing a 5-year recovery plan to return to full operating capacity, highlighted by a year of promotions celebrating the Centre’s 50th anniversary in 2022.
Wayne Alexander expressed his honour at the appointment, stating,
“Following in the footsteps of Ken Leggate, who has been a cornerstone of our Centre for over three decades, is both a privilege and a responsibility. My journey with Redbridge began in 2000, and I’ve seen firsthand the dedication and passion that goes into making this Centre a premier destination for both our local community and international events. As we continue to navigate post-pandemic challenges, I am committed to building on our 50-year legacy, ensuring that Redbridge remains a family-friendly community hub and a beacon for sporting excellence. Together with our talented team and the Board of Trustees who have shown their full support, I look forward to leading Redbridge into its next chapter of growth and success.”
A welcome and introduction event for key stakeholders to meet Wayne Alexander will be held on 14th August, sponsored by Savona Foodservice.
In addition to his role at Redbridge, Wayne is a mentor for Women in Banking and Finance (WIBF), a social enterprise volunteer-led organisation promoting diversity and gender equality in financial services in the UK. Wayne spoke at the recent WBIF Growth Conference, offering his insight into Financial Empowerment, and is proud to be able to contribute to building a healthier and more equitable society.
